A short history of how we grew up in the world of working Capital and kept our personality. We did not set out to become one of North America’s leading private lenders. We began with a single insight: small and mid sized businesses needed better access to working Capital and a lender who truly understood the realities of running a business.
That insight became reality in 1999 with the launch of Liquid Capital. We approached it not just as lenders, but as entrepreneurs ourselves. We understood the pressure of paying payroll before receivables came in, the frustration of delayed customer payments, and the value of having a funding partner who truly understands these challenges.
This entrepreneurial perspective shaped our approach from the start: practical, straightforward, and grounded in real-world experience. It’s a mindset that continues to define how we work with businesses today.
Factoring Has Been Around Longer Than You Think
Factoring isn’t new. It’s one of the oldest forms of commercial finance, dating back thousands of years to merchants in ancient Mesopotamia. Over time, it powered trade across Europe and North America, evolving from a tool for international commerce to a core working capital solution for businesses of every size.
By the late 20th century, factoring had become an established financing option in North America. We’re proud to have been among its early adopters in Canada, bringing solutions shaped by entrepreneurial experience to businesses navigating the everyday challenges of growth.
From Factoring Roots to a Broader Platform
Liquid Capital grew into one of the largest factors in Canada, with the most extensive network of factoring professionals in North America. As business needs evolved, so did our ambition. Within our ecosystem, Blacksail Capital Partners emerged to offer more tailored asset-based lending solutions, all built with that same entrepreneurial DNA.
In 2023, we expanded again with the launch of Baker Garrington, a wholly owned subsidiary focused on customized working capital and trade finance solutions, particularly for industries such as logistics, oil & gas, and staffing. Baker Garrington’s combined years of experience brought fresh origination talent and commitment to focusing on each individual client’s needs while operating under the same guiding principles.
This laid the foundation for Garrington Capital, the umbrella platform that unites Liquid, and Baker Garrington. Together, we deliver a full suite of verticals:
- Invoice Factoring for working capital access
- Asset-Based Lending (ABL) secured by receivables, inventory, and equipment.
- Lender Finance to support other specialty finance platforms
- Commercial SME Financing for small to mid-market companies
- Specialty Lending for unique, asset-backed opportunities
Liquid Capital remains a core brand in our structure. Garrington reflects our scale and breadth while preserving the entrepreneurial spirit we started with.
Why This History Matters Today
Our roots are not just background—they’re proof of staying power. Over the past 25 years, we’ve lent through changing markets, built solutions when traditional lenders paused, and supported businesses throughout cycles and crises. That track record matters because it ensures we structure Capital based on real-world needs, not rigid models.
When you refer a client to Garrington, you’re introducing them to a team that has funded over $ 6 billion for well over 3,000 businesses, people who have lived in these markets, not learned them second-hand.
What It Means for You
Here’s what it offers referral partners:
